Application for Financial Assistance

Welcome! The application below is to gather initial intake and eligibility information for those seeking financial assistance from The Salvation Army of Cedar Rapids (serving Linn County & Anamosa) who have not received it in the last 12 months. Submission of this form is only for initial screening and is not an approval of assistance. Applications for financial assistance are accepted from the 1st through the 5th of the month. (The end date may be earlier or later depending on the availability of funds)

Please read carefully and answer completely and accurately.  If you need help completing this form, please contact our office at (319)-364-9131.

We will not be accepting applications for financial assistance in the month of December (2024).

RENT ASSISTANCE

Rental payments may be provided to households who have a proven ability to maintain housing, but due to a temporary financial emergency, are unable to pay their current rent. If eligible, the level of assistance is determined based on the financial emergency, the households’ ability to pay a portion themselves, and the funding available

Application for the rent assistance program requires:

  • Income - greater than or equal to 2 times the rent to show that the living situation is affordable. For example: if rent is $500, income should be $1,000 or more.
  • Temporary, financial emergency that made paying the rent not possible. You must be able to clearly show documentation of the cost of this emergency. For example, a paid receipt for emergency dental work or documentation of unpaid time off work due to illness. Everyday expenses such as utility bills & groceries are not considered an emergency under this program. The application will ask about your crisis, as well as the cost of this. Please pay special attention here. This is not what you have not paid, ex. rent, but why you were not able to pay.
  • Balance owed of 1-month rent or less. We are not able to assist in a situation where it will not result in the stabilization of housing. You must have a viable plan to pay the full rent in the coming months.
  • Current residence. This program does not assist with deposits. You must have a history of maintaining this residence.

UTILITY ASSISTANCE

Utility payments may be provided to households who meet the basic eligibility guidelines below and have income to maintain the utility in the following months.

Application for utility assistance program requires*:

  • A total balance owed of $500 or less.
  • Current residence – Must be living at the address assistance is being requested for
*A documented and verifiable financial emergency is not required to apply for this assistance; however, priority is given to households where a financial emergency made paying for the utility bill not possible.

REVIEW PROCESS

Applications will be considered in the order received until funds are allocated. The applicant will be contacted by phone or email to inform them of the initial screening by the end of the 10th business day after submission.
