National Donut Day in Dane County – Where to Go and Who You’re Supporting

Jun 7, 2021

On the surface, National Donut Day is just another day where we’re encouraged to enjoy in our favorite foods. But, you may be surprised to learn that this holiday is actually rooted in the history of The Salvation Army.

In 1938, National Donut Day was started to celebrate the women, affectionately called “Donut Lassies”, who provided free donuts, coffee, and spiritual care to soldiers on the frontlines during World War I.

Major Melissa Shiels recalls that her grandfather received warm donuts from the Donut Lassies when he got off the train to serve our country overseas. “He always talked about how much comfort he felt when he received donuts from The Salvation Army. It really had a lasting impact on him,” she says.

To celebrate and spread information about this history-rich national day, The Salvation Army of Dane County will be providing free donuts from 11:30 AM to 1 PM (or until supplies last) outside of The Capitol – specifically, on the 10 block of N Pinckney, near The Old Fashioned. All are welcome to come and enjoy!

Additionally, The Salvation Army is collaborating with Bloom Bakeshop and Greenbush Bakery to share information about The Salvation Army history, and, what the non-profit is up to in our very own community. Their services include:

  • Emergency shelter to families and women, but we also work with them to secure jobs, permanent housing, and overcome barriers to establish self sufficiency
  • Low-cost or free childcare, summer camps, and meals to low-income families
  • Resources like medical and dental clinics, mental health care to folks experiencing homelessness
  • Spiritual care and worship

At each bakery on June 4th, those who purchase donuts will receive a flyer about Donut Day and The Salvation Army and will have the opportunity to make a donation if they’re compelled.
