New Shelter Facility For Families Opens in Madison
After a year of families being sheltered in hotels, a vacant nursing home is renovated into a family shelter for up to 35 families.
Hi Everyone! Tara Barica (Assistant Director of Social Services) and Melissa Sorensen (Executive Director of Social services) here. We wanted to take a second to share this exciting day with our community! Today is the official opening day of our new family shelter site!
The past year (and a half) has been something we cannot even describe. Our team has spent endless hours working to make sure the families and women we serve, as well as our staff, have a safe and healthy place to go day and night. We're so thankful for everyone that has helped out, big or small. We want to thank all of our supporting staff as well as all of our amazing shelter, case management, administrative, kitchen and maintenance staff that have changed/increased their work schedules in order to accommodate the opening of our new site and provide support to the people we serve.
We also want to say thank you to the City of Madison (CDD, Engineering and many other folks), Dane County, The Salvation Army Advisory Board, our new Milwaukee Street Neighbors, TEP and the rest of MMSD, donors who have supplied much needed supplies, the many vendors that have helped transform the shelter, The Homeless Services Consortium and everyone that has been working tirelessly to advocate and support folks experiencing homelessness. We could not do what we do without you.
We look forward to providing a safe and welcoming space for families in this building for years to come.
