Sunday Service Heals
Ask anyone in attendance, and they’ll tell you that Sunday mornings at The Salvation Army Harbor Light Center are special. The day starts with Bible Study, where men and women come together to hear a hope-filled message about God. Each person sitting in Bible Study has their very own bible, which was gifted to them when they entered the program. Many books show signs of heavy use, with highlighted verses and notes jotted down while they explore passages that will help them on their recovery journey.
From there, everyone makes their way into the chapel for Sunday service. It’s a time where clients can take what they’ve learned in Bible Study and apply it to their personal journey. Some may be moved to speak up and pray over their peers, while others simply visit the alter to pray silently.
“I’ve been in those seats.” explained Sherman, a former Harbor Light Center client. “I’ve been in the exact same position as all these men and women, and I want them to know how God helped me. It’s important to allow Him to help you in your journey.”
In late December, Sherman came back to the Harbor Light Center to help Envoy Charlotte Coffer deliver the Sunday message. Her sermon to everyone was to get ready for the new year and to cleanse your soul and body in preparation for what is to come.
“I look forward to a new year, but I also must appreciate the last year.” Envoy Coffer shared. “Don’t just forget about where you came from, because it all shapes you.”
Sunday service unites the Harbor Light community, bringing together people at all stages of their recovery. It’s a time each week when they get to share their faith and lift each other up in prayer.
“God has been good, and I praise Him for everything He has given me. Let Him speak to you in moments you are needing Him,” said Sherman during his message to everyone.
Services always end with “popcorn praise”, a Harbor Light tradition where people stand to share gratitude: I’m thankful for the Harbor Light staff. I’m thankful to be here another day. As everyone leaves, the room feels lighter, faith is strengthened, and everyone is prepared for their journey ahead.
