Poverty Often Hides in Plain Sight

More than 13 percent of Marshall County residents live below the federal poverty line.

This means they often struggle to obtain basic necessities like food and clothing, as well as pay monthly expenses like rent, utilities and prescriptions. We're here to help.

How We Help Overcome Poverty

Our goal in providing the below services to families and individuals in need is to ease burdens, offer some peace of mind and help people conquer challenging circumstances.

Emergency Assistance
No one should have to choose between heating their home during the frigid winter months and putting food on the table. Yet, sadly, many are forced to make that very choice. That's why we partner with United Way to help pay bills including rent and utilities when the budget is tight. Individuals and families in need in Marshall County are able to participate in this program once every 12 months.

Representative Payee Program
Managing a budget with a limited, fixed income can be a challenge. That's why we offer the Representative Payee Program, confidential and compassionate budgeting assistance for those on a fixed income who receive Social Security due to mental or physical limitations.

We help clients budget their income to ensure their housing, food, medical and material needs are met. We also communicate frequently with the Social Security Administration and guide clients through the completion and submission of required paperwork. Additionally, we serve as a referral service, helping with food assistance and housing applications, conferring with case managers and/or medical staff, and supporting clients through crises that arise.

Seasonal Assistance
Christmas is the season of anticipation and celebration, especially for children, which is why we offer families in need toys and food during the holidays. We strive to ensure every child in Marshalltown experiences the joy of Christmas morning and families can gather around the table for a Christmas meal.

Food Programs
Our food pantry helps ensure that individuals and families who are struggling to make ends meet get the food they need. Sal's Cupboard is open Monday-Friday for food assistance and can be visited every 30 days. Learn more.
