Giving Tuesday - Your Day to Do the Most Good

Nov 23, 2018

This year Giving Tuesday is November 27th. Giving Tuesday is a global day of giving that supports philanthropy and charitable acts. Millions of people choose Giving Tuesday as an opportunity to recognize social efforts and support their favorite causes.

Here are the top 7 ways to support The Salvation Army on Giving Tuesday and throughout the holiday season.

  1. Make an Online Donation
You can be a hero to a neighbor in need with a donation to The Salvation Army. Your support will help hard-working families who struggle to put food on the table, make rent and keep the heat on every day. Your gifts will make Christmas bright for a child. And your donation will help someone work to overcome addiction.
  1. Ring a Bell
Grab your family, friends and a cup of hot cocoa and pick your favorite red kettle spot. A volunteer bell ringer raises and average of $30 an hour, which provides two bags of groceries or a night of shelter.
  1. Make Christmas Possible for a Child in Need
No child should be without a gift to open on Christmas morning. Provide a joyous holiday for a child in need through our Angel Tree program.
  1. Clean Out Your Coat Closet
Donate a new or gently-used coat through the Chicago Bears/Jewel-Osco Coat Drive or the NBC5/Telemundo Coat Drive.
  1. Answer Phones at the WBBM “Good Neighbor” Radiothon
Join us on December 7th at Woodfield Mall to collection donations from WBBM radio listeners. Proceeds from the Radiothon benefit the Army’s programs that fight hunger and homelessness. Email the Volunteer Services Department or call 773.205.3532 to register.
  1. Host a Drive
Shelters and food pantries always need supplies to give to those in need. Food items most often needed are canned vegetables, rice, potatoes, fruit in cups/cans, fruit snacks, granola bars and cereals. Other items needed include soap, toothpaste and toothbrushes, shower caps, socks, underwear, deodorant, and brushes. Email the Volunteer Services Department or call 773.205.3532 to schedule a drive.
  1. Share Your Time
Volunteer to help those in need this season. Your time and talents are our treasure! Call 773.205.3532 for more information.

This year to celebrate Giving Tuesday, Captain Shield has invited some of his mascot friends to join him at red kettles! Skates, Staley Da Bear and JoJo will be ringing that bell. Visit our Facebook Event page for times and locations.
