Behind the Shield: Alison Cefalu
Alison Cefalu has been a member of Echelon MKE and became co-president in 2021. Echelon is a group of young professionals (21-40) who supports The Salvation Army of Milwaukee County and its efforts to provide shelter, food, clothing, counseling, and countless other services to thousands of men, women, and children in need. how did you frist learn about the salvation army and echelon?
About five years ago, I started seeing social media posts about cool and interesting volunteer opportunities from Echelon members. I filled out an application, had an introductory meeting, and the rest is history.
What is your favorite part of being involved with The salvation army?
The many ways to give back! I love that our division keeps Echelon in mind for volunteer opportunities and various events throughout the year. The connection provides a better understanding of the organization and the many ways it improves our community.
What has been your favorite experience/event?
I have two. The 2019 Dinner in the Alley was an incredible experience and really highlighted the impact and reach that Echelon has in Milwaukee. My favorite experience is Served. This gives Echelon members the opportunity to provide a 5-Star dining experience for the residents at the Emergency Lodge. The smiles, hugs, and moments of gratitude are memories I will never forget.
what is one thing you believe the world should know about the salvation army?
The impact! Before getting involved, I thought The Salvation Army was only bell ringing. Learning about the various programs and services has been truly eye opening.
What are three words you would use to describe the salvation army?
Impactful, hopeful, love.
is there anything you would like to add?
I am grateful for the opportunity to volunteer with The Salvation Army. The connections and friendships I have made will last a lifetime.
