The Art of the Red Kettle: Liz Carver

Oct 31, 2018

LIZ CARVER is a designer living in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. She is passionate about integrating faith and art, currently working at Eastbrook Church and recently graduated with a degree in theology and art from Fuller Theological Seminary. She is the co-owner of Third Coast Paper, maintains the @hipscript Social Media account, and does freelance work as well.

Why did you want to participate in The Art of the Red Kettle?
I was honored to be asked to participate in the Art of the Red Kettle. The Salvation Army red kettles are such an iconic sight during the holiday season. But I was particularly drawn to the theme of “Light of the World” and all of the visuals that theme inspired.

What is your favorite aspect of The Salvation Army?
I think many people know that the Salvation Army has stores, that it raises money, that it does good in the world, but my understanding of The Salvation Army changed about 15 years ago when our family decided to forgo giving each other Christmas gifts and instead participate in a gift donation program with the Salvation Army. We sponsored a family, shopped carefully for them, and it was one of my favorite Christmases!

How did you first learn of The Salvation Army?
I am not sure how to answer this question. The Salvation Army has just always been around. I probably first noticed the red kettles when I was a child.

What is your inspiration for your kettle art design?
My inspiration is the text “Light of the World” text itself. Most of my creative work as a designer is typographic and I really enjoy doing hand lettering. I’d like the text and the theme to shine through but to also still keep the iconic red kettle color as the background.

Each day until the Milwaukee County Red Kettle Kickoff, we will feature each of the artists participating in The Art of the Red Kettle. At the end of our friendly competition, there will be three artists who win the titles of Most Social Media Likes, Most Funds Raised, and Most Creative. You can help us decide! On November 9th, we will post a photo album of each artist's kettle. You can vote for your favorite kettle by liking that kettle's photo. If you'd like to help the artists raise the most funds, you can visit: salar.my/KETTLEART and donate to your favorite kettle. Funds will support The Salvation Army's Red Kettle Campaign which supports over 80 programs and services throughout Milwaukee County. Thank you for supporting The Salvation Army and local artists.
