The Art of the Red Kettle: Sara Skinner

Oct 30, 2018

Sara Skinner was born in southern WI and has had a lifelong love of art.  She now lives in northern WI with her husband and two children and enjoys painting tree scenes and abstracts.  Her inspiration comes from many places including the beautiful Northwoods and a love for birch trees.

Why did you want to participate in the Art of the Red Kettle?

It's been my wish to use my art for a good cause, and this opportunity is more than I had imagined!

What is your favorite aspect of the Salvation Army?

The Salvation Army is so deeply involved in the community and you can see that they are truly making a difference in a lot of lives. It's wonderful that the Cold Spring location was able to open a food pantry that will help the community even more.

How did you first learn of the Salvation Army?

I have childhood memories of going Christmas shopping and seeing the bell ringers and red kettles; they were always a part of the holiday season.  I never would have guessed that I'd have the chance to paint one of those kettles someday.

What is your inspiration for your kettle art design?

One of my favorite subjects to paint are birch trees, and I knew I wanted to incorporate them in the design using the theme 'Light of the World'.  The image of the North Star shining brightly in a nighttime winter scene came to mind and symbolizes that even in the darkness, there is a comfort, hope, and guidance from a light above.

What are your social media handles so people can follow your kettle?

Each day until the Milwaukee County Red Kettle Kickoff, we will feature each of the artists participating in The Art of the Red Kettle. At the end of our friendly competition, there will be three artists who win the titles of Most Social Media Likes, Most Funds Raised, and Most Creative. You can help us decide! On November 9, we will post a photo album of each artist's kettle. You can vote for your favorite kettle by liking that kettle's photo. If you'd like to help the artists raise the most funds, you can visit: salar.my/KETTLEART and donate to your favorite kettle. Funds will support The Salvation Army's Red Kettle Campaign, which supports over 80 programs and services throughout Milwaukee County. Thank you for supporting The Salvation Army and local artists.
