SUNSET CRUISE for the COMMUNITY

Benefit for Struggling Households in Emmet, Charlevoix and Antrim Counties

PETOSKEY, MI, July 2, 2024 –The maiden voyage of the Sunset Cruise for the Community embarks at 7PM on Tuesday, August 27, 2024 from the Petoskey City Marina’s Clock Tower Pier in Bayfront Park. The Sunset Cruise is a new event that is fully sponsored by friends of The Salvation Army of Petoskey to raise funds and awareness for programs and services that assist struggling local households with critical human needs such as food, utilities, rent, child and senior programs, addiction recovery support and more. Demand for assistance has more than doubled over the last 4 years and continues to rise.

The Sunset Cruise is a fun-filled light-hearted social affair with savory hors d’ oeuvres and sweets provided by local caterer Sarah McDonnell of Little Bay Gourmet. Boaters can relax and sip on a beverage while chatting with friends, learn about historical rescues at the maritime display and enjoy the poetry of traveling Bard Jim Ribbey aboard the Harbor Princess while viewing one of Lake Michigan’s million-dollar sunsets on Little Traverse Bay.

“We are extremely blessed to live in such a beautiful area, but even here poverty hides in the background. Many who have summer homes here don’t know about the real struggle most year-round residents have just to afford basic needs like food, rent or utilities”, says Advisory Board Chairman Jeff Higgs. “The next time you drive around town take a real look and you will see many family homes that were converted into multi-family units because housing is unaffordable and scarce. Many cannot even afford to live in town so you’ll also notice impoverished properties in the country or in other smaller surrounding towns. You may have noticed the workforce has become smaller over the last few years due to Covid and inflation. If we do not support the local workforce, eventually there won’t be anyone left here to keep running the businesses we rely on”.
