We fight poverty with love Image

We fight poverty with love

By providing programs that serve the body, mind and soul, The Salvation Army helps alleviate the symptoms of poverty - and works to address the root issues that cause it.

How we help overcome poverty

Poverty is often the result of, and catalyst for, chronic struggles with hunger, addiction, housing insecurity, mental illness, unemployment, educational voids, and various forms of abuse. These interconnected issues continue year after year and generation after generation. That's why we work to meet the needs of the whole person through short- and long-term assistance. Through programs that serve the body, mind and soul, we alleviate the symptoms of poverty, then work to address the root issues that cause it.

Explore our programs below:

Pathway of Hope

The Pathway of Hope is a holistic approach to working with families where caseworkers, instead of providing one time assistance, help people realize their interests and support them in identifying and achieving their goals through a well-defined timeline. We help families break away from the cycle of generational poverty and equip them with the tools and resources they need to reach their goals for a better future. Click here for more info, or call our office at 313-897-2914 to speak with our case worker, Carolyn Robinson.

DTE Assistance

We offer utility payment assistance on a case-by-case basis. Services include halting crisis situations with DTE payments, assisting with enrollment in affordable payment plans and other services. Emergency assistance is also offered to fire victims through our voucher program. The voucher can be used at a Salvation Army Thrift Store of their choice to purchase items from clothing to household goods. If you need to apply for help, contact Brenda Blackman at 313-897-2914 or Brenda.Blackman@usc.salvationarmy.org.

Food Pantry

We hold a food pantry on Thursdays from 10:00 a.m. - 11:30 a.m or until materials are gone. It is open to anyone. Our food pantry is also open Monday through Fridays for emergency needs.

Christmas Cheer Program

We offer a Christmas Cheer Program to provide families with joy throughout the holiday season. For more information, contact Carolyn Robinson at 313-897-2914 or Carolyn.Robinson@usc.salvationarmy.org.

Disaster Relief

We provide disaster relief services for when unfortunate events hit our community. For more information, contact Carolyn Robinson at 313-897-2914 or Carolyn.Robinson@usc.salvationarmy.org. Click here for more information on The Salvation Army's Emergency Disaster Services.
