The Family Programming offered at Turning Point Programs is educational programming for consumers and family members. All consumers are required to participate and are more than welcome to invite their family to join! The lecture topics are focused on family issues but do not require a family member to be present. A consumer that does not have a family member available to attend would still benefit from the educational information provided.

Family Programming Lectures

SELF ESTEEM
Recipe for self esteem, working with positive affirmations and esteem booster. Group activity and consumers fill out a recipe card of positive esteem boosters.

POSITIVE DECISION MAKING
Comparison of negative and positive decisions.  Lecture on ways for self improvement and growth on strengths and weaknesses. This lecture includes 5 minutes of meditation for a strength perspective.

TOXIC PEOPLE
This lecture is on “high maintenance people” and how it effects addiction.  Lecture includes a high-maintenance self test and recognizes the following people in our lives: Critic, Martyr, Wet Blanket, Steamroller, Gossip and Control Freak and how the addiction interacts with these negative characteristics.

THE JELLINEK CURVE 
This lecture reveals the Pretrial, Crucial and Chronic phases in addiction and how the family roles and characteristics are viewed. All levels of the Jellinek curve are discussed including: first use of alcohol and/or drugs, loss of ordinary will power, complete defeat admitted, adjustment to family needs, care of personal appearance, and group therapy for recovery.

FAMILY ROLES 
This lecture points out family roles and how they can effect addictions.  Powerlessness and unmanageability are discussed. A self test on family powerlessness is given and the family roles are discussed: Family Hero, Placate, Scapegoat, Lost Child and Mascot.

CONSEQUENCES AND IMPACT OF ADDICTION
This lecture includes a video of 4 speakers who have direct implications of drinking and driving.  The emotions and family implications are discussed of addictions are discussed after the video.

THE DISEASE MODEL
This lecture includes an index card handout to fill out including: high risk situations, warning signs and coping skills. Family members deal with their own denial about what is happening with addiction including: drugs, alcohol, food, sex, gambling, etc.


Psycho Educational Lectures

FEAR IN A HAT
This lecture talks about fears in recovery.  Consumers answer a question and they are annonymously pulled out of a hat and discussed.

LOST AT SEA
This lecture focuses on coping skills and survival in recovery.  Sometimes we feel stuck in survival using non-productive patterns and afraid to ask for help. A group activity is completed’ individually and then in groups of 3 or 4 and results are compared on “how we survived” while we are lost.

FEELINGS 
This lecture starts by discussing emotions and how we use our emotions to express ourselves i.e. anger, jealousy, happy, excited, embarrassed and fear.  The lecture includes and activity using colors to relate to the above mentioned emotions.

FUN ACTIVITY LECTURE
This lecture includes a “super hero” worksheet that we list fun activities to do in recovery.  This includes a discussion on how to balance our fun activities, family and work in recovery.  We compare and add new activities to our worksheet to use so that we are not bored in recovery.

EMOTIONS 
This lecture discusses emotional situations and how they affect our body and reactions.  Starting with our thoughts, emotions then physical sensations and ultimately our behaviors.  Coping skills for stress is the goal for this lecture.

BIPOLAR LECTURE
This lecture informs participants facts and myths about Bipolar. Handouts from Hazeldon’s, Understand Bipolar Disorder and Addiction, is given out and criteria is discussed. Artwork and Bipolar is also discussed including a handout from a local artist titled “Life as a Two-headed Beast”.

Other Ways We Meet Needs
