SALVATION ARMY CHAIRMAN JEFF HIGGS
HONORED WITH PRESTIGIOUS WILLIAM BOOTH AWARD
September 21, 2023, Petoskey, MI- Jeff Higgs, Advisory Board Chairman for The Salvation Army of Petoskey, was awarded the prestigious William Booth Award, named after The Salvation Army’s founding father and is one of the highest honors conferred upon an individual. Since the founding of the Petoskey Corps in 1901, it has only honored one other recipient; David Meyer, of the Meyer Ace Hardware Company family. The William Booth Award is based on many years of dedication towards meeting mission goals, exemplary service to the community, wise council, leadership qualities and financial contributions. Jeff has gone above and beyond all measures during his many years of service, dedicating his life to helping others in need.
Advisory Board Chairman, Jeff Higgs says “working with the leadership and staff of the Salvation Army has truly been an honor as every day they positively change the lives of people in our community. They are a ‘force for good’ and everyone in our area is better off because of the work they do.”
Prior to joining Petoskey Corps’ Advisory Board in 2005, Jeff spent many years serving on the Detroit Temple Corps Advisory Board and the Eastern Michigan Advisory Council for multiple Corps from 1992-1998. Representing Chrysler Corporation, he took part in regional fundraising through many major corporations. After relocating to Harbor Springs, Jeff participated in a local Stephen’s Ministry, held leadership positions at Birchwood Farms Country Club and has been a volunteer mediator for Northern Community Mediation.
“We are blessed to have Jeff leading our mission forward and ensuring that we are serving our community to the best of our ability” says Envoy Roman Hank. “Because of his dedication we are in a strong position to continue meeting the needs of our community despite the increasing demand for services.”
As Chairman of the Petoskey Corps, Jeff has been instrumental in developing a strong Advisory Board which has pushed the mission forward, expanding programs and services to meet local needs. Due to the amount of growth, he and other leaders felt that the current facility was no longer meeting the needs of essential staff or the community and decided to take steps to acquire a building that will become the new Community Center after renovations are completed.
