Need Assistance? Emergency Prep Guide

While every disaster is unique and requires a different response, the core of The Salvation Army's Emergency Disaster Services consists of several basic principles. These principles aim to address many of the typical needs for a disaster survivor. To Do the Most Good, the Salvation Army's disaster relief is also flexible. Our services are adapted to the specific needs of individuals or communities, and these services are scalable according to the magnitude of the disaster.

How our EDS Brings Relief

   Emergency Preparedness & Training

One of the best ways to ensure you and your family can face an unexpected emergency, or disaster, is through preparation. The Salvation Army's Emergency Disaster Services includes training, disaster guidance and even certification classes. Together, these proactive services help our local communities stay ready for emergencies and understand how best to help one another during disasters.

    Natural Disaster Response

Floods, tornadoes, fires and earthquakes all happen without warning. That is why The Salvation Army's EDS team of staff and volunteers stay ready to meet disasters at any moment. These trained teams organize, communicate and support on the scene of any disaster.

The EDS teams play many roles in the wake of a disaster: from providing food and water for survivors and disaster relief workers, to playing a role in long term relief planning. These efforts help meet the immediate needs of those affected by a disaster and ensure that real healing takes hold in the communities who are in need.

Emotional & Spiritual Care

The aftermath of a major disaster or emergency can bring a lot of emotional stress and rigors. The Salvation Army's EDS teams work to provide healing during this challenging time by offering spiritual comfort and emotional support to survivors and emergency workers. Salvation Army counselors, who are often ordained as clergy (officers), may simply offer a "ministry of presence," but often people who know about The Salvation Army as representatives of God may ask for prayer or guidance from the Bible. Disaster relief and healing services are provided to all who are in need, without discrimination.

    Emergency Response

The Salvation Army knows that emergencies come in all shapes and sizes. Sometimes entire communities are affected, but there are many instances of single families or individuals who are facing an emergency situation. Our local EDS teams readily meet these needs too.

Volunteers and staff members are trained together to answer the call, wherever the Salvation Army's mission is needed. If there is a local emergency, EDS will be on the scene offering support in any way needed.
