Cheerful, appreciated, and full of joy.

In 2022, The Salvation Army volunteer team was made up of over 215 volunteers who served nearly 10,000 hours.

Our volunteers are Crucial to our effort of Doing the Most Good in the community. We appreciate each volunteer and their time and commitment to loving all.

It truly takes an army.

“Volunteering for your organization adds such meaning to ALL lives touched across our region. We walk this life together. So, if we might find ourselves doing alright at different points in time, it is a gift for the receiver AND ALSO a gift to the giver to be able to help and uplift our fellow neighbors. They can then do the same for us and/or others in need if/when/as they are able. We, as humans, are in a never-ending circle of love and inspiration!” – a Volunteer with The Salvation Army

New Volunteers!

Thank you for your interest in volunteering with us! All newly interested individuals, groups, or community service volunteers are required to create a volunteer application FOUND HERE and pass a background check.

Individual Sign-Up:

When signing up as an individual you will want to follow this link and fill out an application. Depending on your volunteer location you may be asked to participate in various trainings in addition to undergoing a background check.

Group Sign-up:

We ask that you have one "group leader" who creates a volunteer profile here.  If you are part of a group that is looking to volunteer with us, please reach out to Willow Pecha, our Community Relations Specialist, at 608-782-6126 ext. 226. Your group will then be scheduled up times and dates that are appropriate for the size of your group. For most volunteer opportunities, we allow groups of up to 10 poeple.

Community Service Info:

Before you can start your community service hours, you will need to complete online forms including creating a volunteer profile here and a background check. If you are looking to complete your community service with us, please reach out to Willow Pecha, our Community Relations Specialist, at willow.pecha@usc.salvationarmy.org or 608-782-6126 ext. 226. If you do not have access to a computer or the internet we will coordinate with you to help in the process.

Year Round Opportunities

Thrift Store:
Help receive donations, sort and tag items, and hang clothes on racks. Some volunteers may work in the front of the store organizing shelves (Monday through Saturday).

Reminder that all donations and hours that are spent helping at the Thrift Store go directly back to our shelter.

Volunteer hours are flexible. You can choose when and how long you'd like to volunteer for!

Store hours: Monday-Friday 9am-6pm, Saturday 9am-5pm, and closed Sunday!

Meal Program:
Help in the kitchen! Help prepare and serve food, as well as clean up afterward. We serve 3 meals a day to our residents and provide lunch every day through our canteen window.

Monthly Distribution:

The Salvation Army of La Crosse County and Hunger Task Force work together to coordinate a monthly food distribution to the community. We often need volunteers to help prepare the food boxes and volunteers to help distribute them. Follow us on Facebook for updates, as these dates are scheduled about 2 weeks in advance.

Seasonal Opportunities

Red Kettle Campaign:

Ring bells at the familiar Red Kettles! This is our largest annual fundraiser, accounting for 1/3 of our annual budget. Help us raise funds to continue the services and programs we provide to the community, including our emergency shelter, meal program, case management, and so much more.

Sign up for Bell Ringing at Register to Ring!

You can sign up as an individual or group! We encourage bringing your talents to the show; singing, dancing, giggling, painting, etc.

We need all the bell-ringing hands we can get!

Angel Giving Tree

We need volunteers to help us register families (early October), sort and organize gifts (November-December), and distribute gifts and food baskets on Distribution Day (December 14th)!

Christmas Food Basket Distribution:

Help us distribute food baskets to families for their Christmas dinner.

For more information or to schedule your volunteer shift, please contact Willow at Willow.Pecha@usc.salvationarmy.org or call 608-782-6126.

Feed the Kids:

Children are able to find nutritious meals at school during the year, but during summer, healthy meals remain important to the development of youth. Help distribute meals to youth in the community over the summer. We ask volunteers to pick up meals from Logan High School, drive and drop off coolers full of lunches, and return! This happens 5 days a week in the summer.

CURRENTLY: We are looking for help to deliver coolers on Fridays from 9am-11:30am! If you are interested in helping package meals, please contact Courtney, Food Director YMCA, at ckramolis@laxymca.org

Back2School:

Help us and area organizations gather, sort, count, and organize school supplies. There are multiple Back2School events to assist with also - guiding students and families around booths to receive items and learn about resources.

CURRENTLY: We have several openings for shifts happening in June and August!

Coats for Kids

Help us sort, count, and organize coats by size to prepare for Distribution Day! We ask for volunteers to help us guide families to coat sizes on Distribution Day as well.
