Why We Love Our Volunteers
As we wrap up National Volunteer Month, Linda Reiter, Volunteer Resource Manager for The Salvation Army Metropolitan Division, offers a personal perspective on the huge difference the thousands of our volunteers make in our Fight for Good every year.
I am incredibly fortunate to have the privilege of working with a very special group of people. Their compassion and dedication is evident, pitching in whenever and wherever needed. They want to make a difference in their community and beyond and have tremendous compassion for those in need. They bring creativity and enthusiasm, whether working on their own or as part of a team.
Who are these people? They are the thousands of volunteers for The Salvation Army who give their time, skills and experience to help fulfill our mission of Doing the Most Good. They work with us in making this world a better place for those less fortunate. They are critical to the mission of The Salvation Army and we could not do all that we do without their help.
Whether making blankets for our homeless outreach or shelter programs, creating a kid’s garden where little ones can learn about caring for plants, serving in a food pantry, painting a gym, mentoring a child toward a more hopeful future, coaching a sports team, answering phones at one of our community centers or any of the hundreds of other projects undertaken by our volunteers, each of these individuals, families, civic and corporate groups are impacting lives every day.
My deepest thanks to every person who volunteers with The Salvation Army in the Chicagoland area. You are impacting lives every time you serve and I am so very grateful for you and all that you do. One of my favorite quotes is from an unknown author and it says “If you want to touch the past, touch a rock. If you want to touch the present, touch a flower. If you want to touch the future, touch a life.” Thank you for choosing to touch a life, because you are helping to create a brighter future.
