The holidays are hard. I had just gotten laid off work and we didn't know how we were going to make Christmas happen for our three kids. Someone told us to sign up with The Salvation Army Angel Tree and it has been amazing! They gave us clothing, toys, food, everything. I could hardly contain my emotions. They saved our family's Christmas.
Continuing this year we are doing our toy shop distribution. This means that families will come in on the day of distribution and "shop" for the gifts themselves. This empowering means of distribution allows families to truly shop for what their child needs that day. The day of distribution families will come in at their appointed time and choose from gifts and clothes for their children. We are excited to be doing angle tree this way again this year because we have seen how impactful this is in the lives of our families!
Never fear though you will still see trees in store and tags on those trees. The change comes from the intent of your purchases. In years past you bought for a specific child. Now, you are buying generally. We are very excited to empower the community, families, and agencies! Should you want more information about Angel Tree and how you can be a part of the magic, please contact us!

History
Along with the familiar Red Kettles (Bell Ringers), the Angel Tree program is one of The Salvation Army's most familiar Christmas efforts. It was created by The Salvation Army in 1979 by Lt. Colonels Charles and Shirley White when they worked with a Lynchburg, Virginia shopping mall to provide clothing and toys for children at Christmas time. The program received its name because the Whites identified the wishes of local children by writing their gift needs on Hallmark greeting cards that featured pictures of angels. They placed the cards on a Christmas tree at the mall to allow shoppers to select children to help. Thanks to Lt. Colonels White, who were assigned by The Army to the Lynchburg area at the time, more than 700 children had a brighter Christmas that first year. The Angel Tree program continues to play a vital role in helping The Salvation Army make the holidays merrier for thousands of children in need. Anyone can participate.
